In this session, we will explore how online romantic relationships are developed and maintained. Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has redefined how individuals engage in online romantic relationships through the use of e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, playing games, live voice chat, and social networking websites.  The internet has become the fourth highest way that people are meeting potential mates, falling only shortly behind family/friend introductions, school/work affiliations, and other activities of interest. Through the discussion, participants will gain information on how to navigate online environment and develop communication skills that can positively impact the experience of finding potential mates in this type of setting.

  1. Overview of the online dating relationship process
  2. Effectively communicate in an online context with the aim of finding a potential relationship and how online communication is different to that in a face to face context
  3. Presentation of self in an online context and how that positively and or negatively impacts the relationship
  4. Draw backs to communication within online contexts
